Abstract In this paper, we present a proposal for supporting lots of unicast multiplexed sessions (SLUMS). We take the position that TCP provides a good basis for SLUMS. Applications are given the flexibility to open as many TCP connections as they wish. Each connection provides an ordered byte-stream abstraction independent of the others, so by mapping application data units (ADUs) onto the connections appropriately, applications can implement various flavors of application-level framing (ALF). We discuss the performance challenges that arise, and propose solutions drawn both from our previous work and that of others.

Internet Engineering Task Force (ietf) Problem Statement and Goals for Active-active Connection at the Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links (trill) Edge
The IETF TRILL (Transparent Interconnection of Lots of Links) protocol provides support for flow-level multipathing with rapid failover for both unicast and multi-destination traffic in networks with arbitrary topology. Active-active connection at the TRILL edge is the extension of these characteristics to end stations that are multiply connected to a TRILL campus. This informational document d...
متن کاملSurvivability schemes for optical backbone and access networks
Network survivability, reflecting the ability of a network to maintain an acceptable level of service during and after failures, is an important requirement for WDM optical networks due to the ultrahigh capacity. The most common network failure is the link failure which could cause enormous data loss and lots of service disruption to Internet users. Although single-link failures are the most co...
متن کاملA Flexible Reflector for Media Streams
Reflectors mapping multicast to unicast sessions have been proposed to enable multicast media distribution for clients in non-multicast capable networks. However, existing implementations do not allow clients to modify the session by using VCR-like commands in a flexible way. In this paper we describe the design and implementation of a reflector mapping a multicast or unicast session to several...
متن کاملUnderstanding the Interactions between Unicast and Group Communications Sessions in Ad Hoc Networks
In this paper, our objective is to study and understand the mutual effects between the group communication protocols and unicast sessions in mobile ad hoc networks. The motivation of this work is based on the fact that a realistic wireless networks would typically have to support different simultaneous network applications, many of which may be unicast but some of which may need broadcast or mu...
متن کاملProposing a new queue service scheme for ABR multicast flow
This paper proposes a queue service scheme destined to multiplexed unicast and multicast connections, pertaining to the ABR (Available Bit Rate) traffic class, and is implemented at the output ports of an ATM switch. Our proposed service scheme has the following important features: 1) each multicast queue, among replicated ones, is attributed a certain priority (high/low) in order to absorb the...
